What is it like when you work with a Sports Dietitian at Essendon Sports Medicine in Melbourne?
In the initial consultation you and your Dietitian will have a chat about your goals, lifestyle, medical history and your current diet and exercise habits.
Your dietitian will use this information to create a detailed nutrition plan that is tailored to you, your goals, and helping you achieve them.
Additionally, your dietitian will provide nutrition education and resources so that you can understand why we are suggesting certain things, which helps you implement it as well as set you up for the future when you are no longer seeing a dietitian.
Follow up sessions are where we adjust the plan or create new strategies to continue helping you reach your goals. These sessions also help with accountability, which is a major factor for getting results.
How many sessions will I need to work with a Sports Dietitian to get results?
The number of sessions that you need varies depending on what your goal is and when you reach that goal.
Some clients have worked with us for years on multiple goals and others only needed one appointment, it varies.
The frequency of appointments is individual as well.
The gold standard is fortnightly but we understand that cost can be a factor or perhaps you’re tracking well between appointments and need less support. Depending on how you’re progressing the frequency of appointments can also increase or decrease accordingly.
Communication between consults is encouraged.
Not everyone has to or does take advantage of this but for those whole like extra support, communication between consults can be extremely beneficial.
This can be done via email or text message and your Dietitian will reply to you within one business day. Additionally your Dietitian will check in with you via a check in form in-between appointments to help eliminate barriers and provide you with as much support as possible

What’s the difference between a dietitian and nutritionist in Australia?
The term nutritionist is not regulated in Australia. Which means that anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, whether they’ve completed a 2-week course or a 3-year bachelor degree. Therefore, when working with a Nutritionist it is best to ask what their qualification is.The scope of practice for a Nutritionist is to provide general healthy eating advice to people without medical conditions. This is because Nutritionists have not been trained in medical nutrition therapy.
